CREATING AWARENESS & BUILDING CONFIDENCE

The next step in Capacity Building is creating a felt-need among the house-owners for safety against future disasters through the use of disaster-resistant techniques. Only then will the trained building artisans be called upon to deliver the needed technology. This process involves educating the people through various means...

1 Information dissemination through brochures, booklets, posters, videos and street-plays.
2 Meetings held with members of both genders and with people of all economic backgrounds and casts. Meetings allow group discussions for effective communication.

3 Interaction with school children to take the necessary information home through interactive talks, rallies, essay and drawing competitions.
4 Confidence building in these techniques so that people would commit their time, effort and, hard-earned money to employ them.
NCPDP attempts to build peoples' confidence through "live demonstration" by constructing on a shaking platform two house models (half scale); one with old technique and one with improved technique. These are then subjected to simulated earthquake conditions to demonstrate the effectiveness of the improved technology to withstand earthquakes.
